Navigating the criminal justice system in light of a Colorado criminal charge can be overwhelming, especially for first-time defendants. In this article, we will discuss…
The most common criminal charges I handle in Colorado include:
In addition to these, I often deal with a range of other federal crimes, which form a distinct category on their own. These can be complex and are often prosecuted much more aggressively than state-level offenses.
Municipal charges in Boulder County, Colorado usually involve less serious offenses. Think of things like DUIs and minor violations. However, I typically don’t handle many municipal cases as people charged at that level often don’t hire private attorneys, choosing instead to handle cases by themselves. Most of my work involves state-level charges, which are more serious and generally warrant legal representation. In contrast to municipal violations, state charges carry heavier penalties and are taken more seriously by the courts.
Domestic violence charges are among the most commonly dismissed in my experience. These cases are often highly emotional, and once we can present the full context, namely who the people are and what really happened, the prosecution is sometimes willing to reconsider.
I’ve also successfully had sex crime charges dismissed. In one case, a college student claimed she was incapable of consenting to sex. After a thorough investigation, we were able to show that she was, in fact, capable of giving consent. These situations often require deep investigation and sensitive handling, but they can lead to dismissal when the facts are fully revealed.
Mental health issues can significantly impact a case. If a person’s mental state rises to the level of diminished capacity, it can limit their legal liability.
In two insanity defense cases I’ve taken on, a client was charged in a fraud case in one. In the other, a federal case, the person was accused of threatening to kill a college professor. In both instances, the individuals were found to be insane at the time of the offenses. In such cases, the outcome often involves commitment to a mental health institution until the individual is no longer considered a threat to the community.
A big part of my job is helping clients and their families stay calm. I walk them through what to expect, explain the legal process, and reassure them that they will get through it.
It’s not just about legal strategy; it’s also about supporting people emotionally during one of the most difficult times in their lives. I see it as part of my role to be steady and empathetic. While some attorneys may view that as outside the scope of their work, I believe it’s essential to good representation.
